The key to anything in hoops or in life is relationships.
Establishing initial connections that lead to long-term connections.
When it comes to building connections and relationships in the NBA, the initial connection point can be anywhere from an e-mail, to a LinkedIn message, to a handshake and hello.
The #1 key to getting to the handshake and hello is to meet someone in person.
One of the best ways to meet NBA personnel in person is at… NBA Summer League.
Now, here comes the key…
You need to be at NBA Summer League when NBA personnel are there.
95% of NBA personnel are not in attendance for the entirety of the NBA Summer League.
Most trickle in through the first few days, stay for around 5 days to a week and then leave. The key to connecting to as many people as possible is to be present the first week of Summer League.
If you are not able to be there the first week, again, it’s not a dealbreaker, but there are people who will be gone by the time you arrive. You just need to make sure you are incredibly intentional with the time you are there.
Don’t wait until you arrive at Summer League to make your connections.
Set up and schedule as many as you can before you arrive. And then upon arrival, be flexible. People’s schedules are continually in flux. But as long as you are present in the arenas (and mainly the hallways!), I can guarantee you’ll meet people along the way.
And one of the best ways to meet people before you even arrive… join our NBA Summer League Crash Course next Tuesday and Wednesday. (Promo: SUMMERLEAGUE for $10 off). In this course, you’ll make connections with peers, meet NBA personnel who will be at Summer League, receive resume and networking tips, and more. We hope to see and meet you there!
