I often get emails from those wanting to work in the NBA that say, “I will work hard and do anything.”
These are two great qualities. Fantastic. And… meaningless in an e-mail.
Maybe I respond with a “how can I help you?”
And you respond, “I’ll do anything!”
That’s as far as that email exchange will get.
Here’s the thing… plenty of people will work hard. Plenty of people will do anything.
How to clean that email up:
You’re willing to do anything - that’s a good start but NBA teams aren’t looking for someone willing to do anything. They’re looking for someone with a specific skill.
What can you do to help the team?
Can you break down game film?
Be a practice player?
Handle equipment?
Manage operations?
Code?
Will work hard - saying that means nothing. Saying you work hard is literally nothing. Working hard is something. So go do that. Go work hard... for a team and then let that Coach tell us how hard you work.
