The best part of the Course was:
The guest speakers, it was so great to hear from coaches and front office staff on a wide range of topics
The balance in perspectives from the guest speakers - feel like we got to hear from a lot of different angles of attack that make up an NBA organization
Getting to meet different NBA figures from different areas of the game and different walks of life
Getting the insight of people who have walked the walk
The best part of the course was the focus on the process. Most basketball courses are too caught up in talking about “advice” and GITG instead put a premium on in depth analysis on the people, roles within a team, and the many factors involved in the draft process.
The best part of the course was getting to know everyone involved - both inside and outside the class. Effort and initiative is required to make these connections; it is well worth it!
How do you plan on using information you learned in the Course:
I think I now have a better understanding of how hard it is to break into basketball. The main point that I will take from the course is to enjoy the journey of finding and remaining employed with an NBA franchise
To help myself network better with people in the NBA and become better with evaluating players and analyzing the draft
To eventually work in the NBA
I’ll be referring to my Big Board and showcasing it the entire time I’m at Summer League! I was lost last year on so many of the non-lottery picks but this year I’m incredible confident about it going into Vegas
Connecting with people I met both colleague and speaker alike, as well as try and improve my draft board process every year
I plan on using the knowledge I gained in conversations with industry executives, the new personnel that I will continue to meet, and as a resource for further research within the world of basketball. I also plan on using the information to touch base with course members and directors as I move on with my own endeavors
Improving my approach to networking. Factoring in PNR defense more to my player evaluations. Creating brief versions of my scouting reports
What was your biggest takeaway from the Course:
My biggest takeaway from this course was learning how passionate you need to be to make a career in basketball. I learned how special it is to have a role in basketball because spots can be limited as the industry is rather volatile
The journey is LONG. Hearing from so many different people about their pathway to working in the NBA was incredible, and the main thing they had in common was the amount of sacrifices they made in order to get to where they were
Just all of the knowledge that I gained, and the connections that were formed. I walked away with a better understanding of things, and friends to talk ball with
My biggest takeaway was that the end of the Second Round isn’t random. In fact, every pick is incredibly purposeful whether for basketball, salary cap, or trade purposes and that’s very exciting to me to know that it goes way beyond the lottery!
There's no one path to the league but the common thread is respectful yet consistent networking. Also there was a common theme of not letting a job in the league take over your life
My biggest takeaway from the course was that basketball is a small world and everyone holds their own path to get to where they want to go as they follow their dreams
I really enjoyed each aspect of the Grow the Game Draft Cohort, John and his crew did an excellent job in making sure each session was engaging and interactive. I would without a doubt recommend this class to anyone looking to build their network and pursue a career in basketball
You will learn a lot and have a lot of fun in the process. Can't ask for much more than that!
This course connected me with talented peers and people who have been where I want to be. They teach a great course and I'd sign up for it again
