We were starting class at one of our GITG101 classes when our teacher, Daniel Marks (Milwaukee Bucks / Howard University) said, “Everyone should turn their cameras on.”

I was reminded of this moment when I showed up at one of my first company meetings the other week. I showed up early and had my camera on. As people trickled into the meeting, everyone wanted to talk to… me. Why? Because I was there first and had my camera on. Only 5 out of around 18 had their cameras on and so those were the only ones corporate spoke to and engaged with.

I’m a bit more of a passive teacher than Daniel. I always appreciate his bluntness. Whereas I’ll think in my head, ‘I really wish they’d turn their camera on and engage more,’ he’ll just spit blunt facts.
When he first said that, it was somewhat of a lightbulb to me. All of the students I would recommend to other teams weren’t the ones who simply subscribed to my content, or sent me a LinkedIn message, or even showed up to class… but it was those who came to class, turned their cameras on, and asked questions.
Turning your camera on and engaging (in any setting) allows others to see your face obviously, but also to see what interacting with you is like. It checks off the third pillar of getting hired, likability.
For someone to know if they want to work with you or not, they need to interact with you.
Put yourself in situations, either in person, or via video to interact with others who are in spaces you want to work.
