Just like hoops fans across the spectrum, NBA personnel get just excited about March Madness and the NCAA Tourney.
As soon as brackets came out, I’d print (until we moved to espn.com) and pass them around to players and staff. We couldn’t have designated prizes due to NBA rules, but in everything, there are always ways around that (wink).
When the tourney started, some of our scouts would go to the different regions and the rest of us would head to the Team Facility’s theater where we would watch 3 games at once on the big screens.
Our scouting assistants would print out ready-made sheets of information for all the prospects we’d be dialed in on throughout the day. As the Video Coordinator, I’d set up a television lineup with all the key games and matchups for us to view and rotate on to the main screen throughout the day. And then the Interns, well, they were kind enough to keep us fed and refreshed throughout the whole day.
I remember when I was just a kid, I was obsessed with the NCAA Tourney. Growing up in Indiana, it was basically part of the class curriculum. For an hour class, we’d wrap up in 10 minutes and our teachers would let us watch the tournament.
Now, being paid to watch the NCAA Tournament, that was a dream.
And for those of you looking to work in the NBA one day, it’s a great time to lock in on some of your scouting skills. March Madness is the one time of year that everyone in a basketball organization from intern to staffer to player to coach to owner is watching the same game. This is often why you see a player who has one big game or even one big shot (Bryce Drew!) shoot up the draft boards. Everyone is watching.
