It was the NBA Trade Deadline that drove me to Twitter.
When I was an Intern in the NBA, it used to be HoopsHype. We’d each hop on HoopsHype when we got to the office in the morning. We’d print it out, highlight parts and drop it on the GM’s desk.
But soon enough, getting the news via those types of sources was too slow. You needed it from Woj and you needed it right now.
So I joined Twitter to join the chaos of rumors and projected trades.
You might be surprised at how similar working for an NBA team is to simply being a fan of the NBA. We watch basketball, we cut up game film, we make analysis and projections, and we read all the articles, sources, and keep Twitter on an open tab for any breaking news.
But as fun as all of that is and sounds, there’s also a lot of real-life aspects to it.
Players you’ve built relationships with over years being traded on a road trip and never seeing them again. Watching families be separated in a moment with the wife staying back with the kids as they finish their semester at school. Head Coaches being fired, staffs being shaken up, and teams going into full-tank mode.
I always loved the Trade Deadline. But working in the NBA certainly gave me a new perspective. As one of our management team walked out on to the court with a “We Are Family” T-shirt on after the Deadline passed only to have a staff member shout, “Fuck that… you just tried to trade all of us.” Ahh, the joys of the Trade Deadline.
