Is There a Chance of Still Getting a Job in the NBA this Season?
Is there a chance? Yes.
Is it likely? No.
I’ve still heard of NBA teams hiring up through the last couple of weeks. And G-League teams are filling out their staffs as well. But more than likely, most positions are filled. So what does this mean for you?
If you have been holding out for a position, but still want to work in basketball, you should be looking to get on with a G-League team or NCAA team. And while it is the off season for the WNBA, now is the perfect time to start looking to see what positions are available in the WNBA. Multiple teams have fired coaches in the last week which means transition. If you’re currently out of the league and want in, transition is a good thing. It means movement and open doors.
Stay ready. Although getting on with a team now is unlikely, there are always a few openings in the next few weeks. Some positions for some people simply won’t work out. The new staffer may leave or the team may have to let someone go. NBA teams love to hire ex-players in roles that require work on and off the court. Stereotypically, ex-players often don’t like to do the off court work (video, running errands, etc). It takes a few weeks for NBA teams to realize that they’ve hired a bunch of personnel who don’t want to be video coordinators, etc. This leaves open doors in season. (not here to bash ex-players, they’re not at fault, it’s those hiring that make uninformed decisions).
Keep building connections. It is always in season for building connections. Stay connected to the teams you applied with. Stay connected to your colleagues who got their opportunity. And keep building new connections.
