“We can only ever speak for ourselves. I’m always weary of advice because all advice is wrong for somebody. Everyone’s situation is so different”. – Simon Coronel
I also am one who is highly leery of advice. And yet, a large portion of my articles deal with giving advice, or what I prefer to call it, best practices.
The reason I am leery is because of exactly what Simon shared, everyone’s situation is different.
I’ve seen people take my advice and immediately land an interview and / or job.
I’ve seen people ignore my advice and immediately land an interview and / or job.
There are so many factors that go into each person’s situation.
One of the things people often want is a prescriptive plan of how to get a job in the NBA (or whatever field they desire). And the fact is, there isn’t a prescriptive plan. I do believe there are best practices and ways to get your name in the mix and give yourself a chance. But no prescriptive plan is going to land you what you want (and any one or company promising that is wrong).
Good advice for one might be bad advice for another, and vice versa.
What to do then?
Continue to seek advice, do informational interviews, talk to those who are in positions you desire to be in.
And then filter the conversation through your own lens, your own story, your own personality, and your own dreams.
