NBA Summer League is the height of NBA and hoops networking. All of your phone calls, e-mails, LinkedIn messages lead up to hoping to make that in-person connection at Summer League. And then when Summer League is over, what’s next?
What’s next is often silence.
NBA folk go on holiday for their one respite of the season.
And all of your buildup to connections and interviews is met with… crickets.
Do not be alarmed, it’s all part of the process!
*
At Summer League, a lot of interviews do take place, formal and informal. E-mails and phone numbers are traded. Relationships are built.
And then the NBA goes on silence for awhile.
*It is appropriate to follow-up with connections but don’t be surprised if you don’t get a response right away, or at all.
*In that case, wait a couple of weeks or a month and follow up again.
*If you are interviewing or informally interviewing for a position for this coming season, ask what timeline you should expect. Ask who you should be in contact with and when you should expect to hear from someone. This will help guide you in knowing when to follow up and reach back out.
*Many Interns and entry-level positions are filled in September or October or even into the season so no need to feel like you are behind of it is silent for awhile.
