As an Intern with the Portland Trail Blazers, I was in the gym every night, rebounding for our 2nd Round Pick, Taurean Green, while Kaleb Canales worked him out. It was still surreal to me to be on the court with these guys who months earlier, I had been watching as fan. Every day at practice, after practice, and that evening, I’d be on the court with Taurean.
Until one day, I saw him in the office with the General Manager.
I heard he’d been traded. I was disappointed and figured I’d let things settle and say my goodbyes. I went back to the office and when I came back out, he was gone. I asked where he was and was told, “He’s on a plane to Denver, we’ll ship him the rest of his stuff.” And the next day, Von Wafer arrived in town from Denver.
It was my first real exposure to the NBA Trade Deadline.
I had always loved the Trade Deadline, watching teams make moves, seeing teams making plans for the future versus competing for a championship now.
Over the years, it became commonplace to see players come and go throughout the season. It was a business. Family would be preached in the preseason but ultimately, everyone knew, it was more business than family. And for me, I had a lot to learn.
This year, GITG101 is leveling up our Trade Deadline Course. Due to your feedback, we’ve added a week to the course so that participants can pick their teams, make trades, and then get feedback from NBA personnel.
The course will take place via Zoom on Jan 30, Feb 6 and Feb 7 (5-7p PT, 8-10 ET). On January 30, we will have a class with guest speakers and go over the rules of the Trade Deadline and trading will commence over the next week. On Feb 6 and 7, we will come back together with guest speakers and go over trades that have been made.
Courses will have interactive discussion with guest speakers who have worked as NBA Coaches, Front Office Personnel, Trainers and more.
