From as early as I can remember, I wanted to step foot in an NBA Draft War Room. In fact the NBA Draft was, you could say, a first love of mine. Maybe I should feel awkward saying that, but I have a feeling, many of us here are cut from the same cloth.
And I still remember the day that I first got to step my foot in a War Room. I was an Intern with the Portland Trail Blazers. Kaleb Canales, my manager, knew how much I loved the Draft and how much time I had put into preparing draft video for the team. He left the War Room and found me in the hall, why don’t you come in for the 2nd Round. It was a dream come true.
As each season went by, I learned more and more of how much went into the preparation for a team’s NBA Draft selection. It wasn’t just scouting. Or video. It was analytics. It was medical. It was intel. It was media influence. It was measurements. It was agents.
And that’s where this class was born. Could we not get all of those same people in a room (Zoom) so that others could learn and go through the process of an NBA Draft?
Our 6-week Zoom course is designed to give you that experience along with the ability to learn amongst your cohort how to work together as a Front Office Staff to make your draft selections at the end of the course.
Class Purpose: Gain hands-on experience in a simulated NBA Draft workshop. Those preparing and hoping to work in the NBA one day will have the opportunity to receive instruction from expert guest speakers, collaborate with cohort members, and put new skills into practice.
Structure: Weekly 60-minute Zoom courses hosted by John Ross and taught by various guest speakers with expertise in their field (scouting, coaching, performance, analytics, medical, agents, media, etc). Classes will include guest speakers, weekly assignments, class participation, and mini cohorts.
Classes Include:
· How NBA Scouts prepare for a Draft
· How and where to watch Video and how to Utilize Analytics
· What resources and websites NBA teams rely on
· How teams gather Intel and Medical reports
· How a Coach prepares / views a Draft
· What does a Draft look like from an Agency
· How does the Media play a role, and more!
Mini cohorts: Class participants will be split into cohorts of 3-4 where they will work together as a team throughout the week to set up their NBA Draft Big Board, refining it each week as they learn from the experts
Final: The final week will include a Mock Draft on June 21 with each mini cohort drafting their roster
