I was still a Video Intern at the time and was told to put some draft film together for the coaching staff to watch. “Just put together their last 3 games.”
One of the things you learn over time is that what NBA executives tell you is not what they mean. You have to learn what they actually want and then decode their ask into a presentation that fits what they’re really looking for.
I put together some film on Nick Calathes. His first 3 possessions weren’t just turnovers they were him making unnecessary behind the back, no look passes out of bounds. The coaching staff started laughing, we couldn’t get them back on track, and Nick Calathes was off our draft board.
I followed the rest of Calathes’ career, hoping he wouldn’t become a star (sorry, Nick).
It was a lesson learned, the power of video. The power of presenting video. The power of watching and curating the right video.
