3 Ways to Connect with NBA Personnel - LinkedIn

Getting a job in the NBA

Most of you know me from LinkedIn. LinkedIn is one of the easiest ways to connect. And one of the hardest places to connect. It’s a numbers game.

I spent some time today responding to LinkedIn messages but the more I scrolled through them, the more I realized I had more messages I had intended to respond to than I first thought. Sometimes they just get buried deeper and deeper and good intentions go by the wayside.

I’m going to leave you with 3 things and one will be my plug so I hope you’re ready :)

1.         Don’t be afraid to follow up

Don’t be afraid to reach out to someone again. The worst they can do is not respond again. Some of you have reached out to me and I realized you first reached out in 2020 or 2021 and as much as I likely intended to respond, I never did.

Unless you sent me 48 links to your work, then I likely left you on read. A professional is unlikely to click on your links unless they have requested them. If they haven’t, the links come across as spam and as potentially harmful to click.  Don’t send links unless requested.

When reaching out, let them know who you are and why you are connecting.  If they don’t respond, feel free to reach out again in a couple of months.   

2.         The Numbers Game

One of my favorite stories is from my guy Zach who I built a relationship with over a couple of years. We finally met at Summer League and I asked, “How did we first connect?” He responded, “I messaged 1,000 people and you responded.”

You don’t know who might respond. But the odds are if you message 1-10 people, you might not hear back anyone. Message 100+ and surely you’ll hear from someone.

In a way, it’s a numbers game.  The more people you reach out to, the more likely you are to hear back from someone.  Try not to get discouraged when you don’t hear back, just keep plugging away and reaching out. 

3.         GITG101 NBA Draft Course

This was the first on-line course we ever did and I absolutely love it. We originally slated classes for an hour and students stayed 3+ hours. It was incredible and still is!

Like I’ve said, it’s hard to connect with someone but I can guarantee if you join one of our courses, you’ll connect with me, Bjorn, Mikey V, Sunny and many others.

For me, it’s an honor you’d invest your time, resources, and growth with us and for me, I want to do the same for you. Unfortunately, I can’t make myself available to everyone who messages me but I will make myself available to everyone who joins one of our courses.
