One of the more challenging things when working in sports is having rhythm to your daily life.
Every day is different but full. Is it a practice day? Shootaround? Game day? Is that team at Home? On the Road? There are so many varying factors to your daily rhythm.
What I’m Reading: The Miracle Morning
I had heard Hal Elrod on the Tim Ferris podcast and was intrigued by his journey and lifestyle. But to be honest, Miracle Morning, sounded a bit cheesy. But alas, I liked his concepts and bought the book.
And the thing is, everything in it is pretty basic and things we all probably already know. But knowing something and applying it are two different things. The book has really helped me apply certain practices to my lifestyle.
What I’m Listening To: The Ringer NBA Show
There are plenty of places to hear from former players about their playing days. Nobody does it better than Raja Bell. He’s been in a myriad of roles in the NBA from his playing days and days as an Executive. His insights are phenomenal and Logan Murdock is an incredible host… and what a pickup of Free Agent Howard Beck.
Raja Bell on being undrafted: “You can’t have coaches wondering what the fuck I’m doing… if that happens in my second stint, I’m out. Because I’m undrafted. I’ll get one good look at it, maybe two if I fit all the physical criteria and then I’m gone. For some dudes, if you don’t fit the benchmarks physically, you get one look.”
You come into the league as a 1st round draft pick – you have to prove to those mother fuckers that you can’t play (they get unlimited opportunity)… come in as a 2nd round or undrafted player, you have to prove, sometimes not once, not twice, three times that you can play before they give you the bag… come in the hard way, you gotta prove you can do it, come in as a 1st round, and you gotta prove to them multiple times that you can’t.”
What I’m Watching: Super Bowl
Ah, that’s an easy one. But the point isn’t the Super Bowl, the point is that it is something that brings people together. That’s what sports do. No matter your race, gender, background, political affiliation, people are brought together by sports. When it comes to finding world peace, sports is always going to be at the forefront of events that bring people together from all over the world and across all spectrums in a community. If you’re working in sports, the opportunities for impact are endless, on a micro and macro level.
What’s new with GITG101:
It has been one of the busiest and most exciting months for GITG101. We want to officially welcome our first two Interns, Alex Burns who is our Basketball Operations Assistant and Kyle Goodier who is our Basketball Strategy Analyst. Both of them were huge to our success in our recent NBA Trade Deadline Course.
We are launching a new website soon! GITG101 began on a Squarespace site. Our first handful of subscribers were found there (Thank you Kendall, Andrew, and Luis!). When I switched to Substack, we 4x’d our growth in a month and the website became a standalone that was rarely utilized. We want to change that.
We will be re-launching the site with archives of video and more. One of the main things we want to do is help our community further connect. We will have an Alumni page for all of you who have been in one of our courses to post your LinkedIn, Substack/website, portfolio, etc. Keep a look out in your e-mail for a note from me or Alex!
And finally, we are launching a Podcast! What’s in the news, on the Substack, in the gym and more. Interested or know someone who might be interested in being a sponsor on our Podcast? Send them our way!
Thank you!
-John
Excited to follow the continued growth!
